Abstract On Mars there are basically three different types of dorsa structures. (i) Wrinkle ridges within low-lying plains (Chryse Planitia) resemble lunar mare ridges with the exception that they are far more numerous in some areas (Hesperia Planum) than on the Moon. They also form intensive polygonal and circular structures. (ii) Some of the ridges belong to the Tharsis-related circumferential zone. (iii) Wrinkle ridge formation on Martian terra has been far more effective than on lunar highlands. The main factors effective in the formation of compressional environment for wrinkle ridge development have been: (i) surface loading and internal shrinking within thin lithosphere areas, (ii) major Tharsis-related crustal tectonics, and (iii) large-scale areal or even global volume decrease(s) within Martian interiors.
