Abstract We present a summary of ongoing work on the properties, origin and evolution of low mass x-ray binaries in globular clusters and in the galactic bulge. Our discussion centers on the insights into these problems that can be derived from study of the ultra-compact binary systems, such as the recently discovered 11-minute binary in the globular cluster NGC 6624.
