AbstractFor validating model-generated cloudiness, the usual approach is a “satellite-to-model” approach consisting in processing satellite observational data to put them in a format compatible with the model outputs. The “model-to-satellite” approach, where the model is used to reproduce satellite measurements as closely as possible, can be more consistent and fruitful. As an example of such an approach, brightness temperature in the longwave window channel of METEOSAT is simulated from cloudiness, temperature and humidity fields produced by the ECMWF forecast model, over the area covered by the METEOSAT field of view, for 5 days of July 1983, and compared to the corresponding ISCCP B3 brightness temperature. Evolution histograms and cumulative frequency distributions of the observed and model generated brightness temperature then allow to pinpoint various weaknesses in the diurnal cycle of the model cloudiness and surface temperature.
