Abstract Ways and means for improving ionospheric models, in particular by going over to adaptive hybrid models (HM) are discussed. Possibilities of passing from adaptation of computed results to adaptation of the model structure are discussed, as well as a phenomenological approach to the interpretation of the properties of an ionospheric feature.
