Abstract In numerous atmospheric models the lower thermosphere is used as a lower or upper boundary region. Other models, which extend from the middle to the upper atmosphere, suffer from various simplifying assumptions in the transition region between the mesosphere and the upper thermosphere. Difficulties in the theoretical description as well as observational gaps give rise to these limitations. We have coupled a two-dimensional zonally averaged grid model of the middle atmosphere (10 to 110 km) with a parameterized model of the thermosphere (above 80 km). Thereby the transport of mass, momentum and energy in the lower thermospheric boundary region of each of the models can be determined with more consistency than by a simple assumption of boundary conditions. The results of the calculations are discussed, with special attention given to the role of diffusive and turbulent transport in the lower thermosphere.
