Abstract The 18 August 1980 CME, an typical example for the disruption of a coronal streamer reported by Illing and Hundhausen /8/, has been re-examined, with emphasis on the asymmetrical expansion in the event. Assuming an eccentrically located source, the numerical simulation result has shown that the asymmetrical crescent high density cloud can only be reproduced by a magnetic flux increment with opposite polarity.
