Abstract Some of the cosmological applications of the IRAS 60 μm survey are reviewed. Redshifts surveys of IRAS galaxies have been used to derive the 60 μm luminosity function and to map the universe at z < 0.5. The origin of our motion with respect to the muwave background appears to be the combined attraction of a dozen or so superclusters, most of them well-known, within 100 h−1 Mpc. The 60 μm source-counts, and direct evidence from redshift surveys, point to strong cosmological evolution of the spiral galaxy population, perhaps as a result of a greater frequency of interactions and mergers in the past. Statistical studies of the IRAS galaxy distribution point to unexpectedly strong clustering on very large scales and a possible inconsistency with present versions of the Cold Dark Matter biassed galaxy formation scenario. Some details of a new redshift survey of galaxies from the IRAS Faint Source Survey are given.
