Abstract In this paper, we have considered a very general van der Waals equation of state to study the one-dimensional motion of magnetogasdynamic (MGD) equations. Transport equations for the discontinuity waves are obtained and studied in detail. The effect of van der Waals excluded volume and the intermolecular force of attraction on the evolution of these waves is studied. Explicit expressions for the jump in the mass density and the magnetic pressure are obtained and analyzed in detail. Finally, the interaction of the weak discontinuity with the characteristic shock is studied and the amplitudes of the reflected and the transmitted waves are obtained.

Highlights van der Waals model. Wave interactions at a discontinuity. Weak discontinuities. Azimuthal magnetic field.
