Abstract A method for reconstruction of the absolute geopotential by satellite data SATEM is proposed. It is based on the presence of an “isopicnic level” in the troposphere at a height about 8 km. Using the method, geopotential heights of 500 and 300 hPa isobaric surfaces over the Europe and Mediterranean are computed. Gridding both the satellite and radiosonde data on isobaric surfaces, the degree of compatibility of the analyses are assessed.
