Abstract The promotion of intelligent transportation is currently at the forefront of national and global transport policies. However many of these initiatives fail in some cases to recognize realities in relation to the ability of small and isolated states to develop in a feasible manner the required infrastructure for the establishment of advanced mobility schemes. This study aims to present the technological developments in land transportation in Cyprus, in the early 20th century. Cyprus, being a small and insular island state, presented some peculiarities in the way railway and motor vehicle transportation penetrated the islands transportation system, resulting to the total failure and the termination of the regional rail operation by the early-50′s. Through a historical review regarding the construction and the operation of the Cyprus railway by the British colonial government in the early 20th century, the reasons of its failure are examined and presented. The study also presents the evolution of the introduction of motor vehicles in the Cyprus transport system, which occurred simultaneously at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as its domination over the railway. The comparative assessment of these two cases may lead to some useful conclusions which will assist the efforts for the future development of the mobility schemes in Cyprus, as well as provide some valuable lessons for the development of the transportation section in similar insular systems.
