Abstract Multitemporal images of southern Tunisia were used to monitor sediment transport systems of playas (salt lakes). These revealed the importance of fluvial processes in transporting sediments within the playas. Large braided channels up to 1 km wide have been identified on the surface of the Chott et Djerid. Ground water additions are associated with large quasi-circular features within the playas, locally known as aioun. Although periodically covered by splays of fluvially transported sediments they persist in the same locations over lengthy periods.
