Abstract Measurements from the EISCAT incoherent scatter radar are used to investigate ionospheric variations in the vicinity of the main trough using experiments with good temporal- and spatial-resolution. For the two cases reported, the F-region density depletion indicative of the trough is associated with increased electric field and F-region ion temperature, elevated F-region electron temperature, increased electron density in the E region, and a positive magnetic bay. These qualities are determined by comparing measurements from trough and ‘non-trough’ days. No small-scale ionospheric changes were detected, but the motion and orientation of the trough could be determined by cross-correlating measurements from four closely-spaced volumes.
