Abstract Ionospheric research by the incoherent scatter method needs high-power high-resolution radars. Representative data obtained at the Kharkov Polytechnic Institute corroborate the possibilities of the incoherent scatter method and show typical variations of various ionospheric parameters in quiet and disturbed periods. Particularly interesting data were obtained during exposure of the ionosphere to high-power HF radiation and during a distant ground-based high-power explosion.
