AbstractBased on the infrared radiative transfer calculations within the cirrus, it is derived that the brightness temperature difference (BTD) between two infrared channels of AVHRR/NOAA is dependent upon the cloud optical properties. The empirical relationship between the BTD and the optical thickness of cirrus is used to retrieve the AVHRR data. Some quantitative structure of the cirrus is obtained with case study.
