Abstract Low frequency magnetic field turbulence is described in terms of an ideal gas of circularly polarized Alfvén solitons. This approach leads to a magnetic field power spectrum with a broad local maximum and an exponential decay and is able to reproduce a special power spectrum obtained by the AMPTE/IRM spacecraft mission upstream of Earth's bow shock.
