Abstract This article presents a hierarchical decision model based on interviews with 45 buyers of new 1978 automobiles. The methodology is borrowed from anthropological decision making studies and focuses on the transportation requirements of the car buyer rather than on characteristics of the automobile. Interior car size is found to be the most constraining decision criterion for this group of buyers. The model accounts for 42 of the 45 cases in the sample.
