Abstract Evidence is gained in favour of local generation of Alfvénic fluctuations in the solar wind. Instabilities developing in regions of strong velocity shear give a local contribution of waves with inward and outward propagation (with respect to the Sun) to be added to the outward travelling waves of solar origin.
