Abstract Modern empirical models of the thermosphere, ionosphere, and geomagnetic field that include longitudinal variations of the modelled parameters are used in a numerical model of thermospheric dynamics. The computations show that significant longitudinal variations must exist in the neutral wind velocities and in the vertical ion velocities at thermospheric altitudes.
