Abstract The deformations and stresses which result from the imposition of concentrated loads are analysed taking account of stresses normal to the mean surface of the structure and of deformations due to shear stresses. A brief account of methods for designing optimal structures is given. Special reference is made throughout to the work of Russian and Polish authors.
