In this paper we study the extinction coefficient of boreal forest by utilizing airborne E-SAR X-band POLInSAR and HUTSCAT X band profiling scatterometer measurements. By combining E-SAR polarimetric coherence measurements with Hutscat tree height measurements we cqalculate forest extinction coefficients by RVoG model inversion an compare the results with HUTSCAT derived extinction values. For retrieval of extinction coefficient we propose robust RVoG model inversion procedure and discuss the model inversion conditions. The work is based on FINSAR project material. The FINSAR campaign was a co-operation project between Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) and German Aerospace Center (DLR). Our results show, that extinction coefficient of boreal forest is quite low enven for X band, especially from nadir looking instruments. Average extinction coefficient of forest canopy retrieved from HUTSCAT measurements is 0.15 dB/m and by retrieved from E-SAR and Hutscat measurements is 0.3 dB/m
