Using 1965 Lloyd's Register of Shipping Rules, ALGOL computer program was written which, when supplied with ship's main dimensions and details of its internal geometry, calculates scantlings, weights and centers of gravity for structure of one typical mid-ship cargo tank; parametric studies were made using program to systematically evaluate several hundred designs covering range of tankers from 10,000 to 200,000 ton dw, and these yielded empirical formulas for weights and centers of gravity, which may be used for preliminary ship design.
