Results of study made by British Ship Research Assn on five generally similar ships, owned by Esso Petroleum Co Ltd, which were operating on route from United Kingdom to Middle East through Mediterranean; for tankers with bilge keels maximum angle of roll was smaller and incidence of rolling to large angles greatly reduced for both load and ballast conditions; e.g., for ship which initially had no bilge keels, total number of rolls over 3° was reduced by about 50% after bilge keels were fitted and there was marked similarity to ship fitted with keels when built; maximum recorded half-angle of roll for ship without bilge keels was over 21° and 15° after keels were fitted.
