Ferry designed and ordered by Canadian Dept of Transport, Ottawa, for service between Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, is under construction by Davie Shipbuilding Ltd; it is to be fitted with continuous main and upper decks, icebreaking bow, cruiser stern with ice-knife aft, and amidship superstructure; there will be five lines of track, space for 12 road trucks; length over fenders 487 ft, molded breadth 69 ft, molded depth to upper deck 48 ft and to main deck 27 ft, scantling draft 21 ft, full load displacement 10,875 tons, total dw 5000 long tons: four 12-cyl Crossley-Pielstick diesel engines develop total of 16,900 bhp at 485 rpm and are geared two/shaft.
