Discussion of aspects which enter into statistical analysis of off-road land locomotion; description of vehicle dynamics, description of factors related to vibrations which limit vehicle speed, and statistical theory of off-road land locomotion based on vehicle vibration when traversing hard ground; concept of power spectral density as measure of roughness of randomly irregular surfaces is introduced and methods of obtaining this from field data are described; linear model described accounts for vertical and pitching motions only; extension of model to two tracked vehicle, which can account for roll, yaw and side-ward motions, is straightforward.
