Initial attempts to establish rational basis for design of off-the-road vehicles showed that response of vehicle to soil constants was such that optimum vehicle would vary from soil to soil for terrestrial and linear surface vehicles, such as striding mechanisms, flexing- and three-dimensional mechanisms, and various rolling mechanisms; exact validation of theory remains elusive; consequently, procedure is rather to propose manageable relationship and submit it to experimental test; once satisfactory relationship has been found, it can be used to predict performance of full-scale vehicles and be validated by field trials.
