Effect of flap on performance and control of airplane; in wind-tunnel tests, with horizontal tail surfaces removed, flap was found to increase maximum lift coefficient from 1.27 to 2.41; in flight tests, flap was found to decrease minimum speed from 58.8 to 44.4 mph; longitudinal and directional control adversely affected by flap.
