In testing method described, moment of ignition is determined by mechanism consisting of diaphragm in cylinder head, phonograph " pick-up," short stiff wire transmitting motion of diaphragm to pick-up, thyratron relay, and neon lamp protractor; empirical ratings such as aniline point, Diesel index, viscosity-gravity index and viscosity-slope index were applied to 19 fuels.
