Display with at least 1000 ft-lamberts is necessary for reliable presentation of radar information under bright daylight conditions in open cockpit, by comparison with normal cathode ray tube indicators acceptable for shipboard use where ambient lighting can be controlled; Farnsworth 7176 Iatron tube was selected as display element for such system, AN/APG-53 radar, developed at Naval Avionics Facility, and shows great promise after 100 hr of flight testing.
