Economics involved in achieving pollution-free vehicles, as projected through end of century for both exhaust-suppressed combustion engines and electric power plants, points to battery-operated cars as less expensive means of curbing automotive emissions; it is predicted that all-electrics will outnumber combustion-engine vehicles after start of 21st century; unlimited range of electric cars will become possible with rapid replacement of depleted batteries at service stations, eliminating need for recharging at home by drivers; transition period might be accomplished with least disruption by hybrid vehicles whose power plant is small gas turbine driving generator, and whose electric traction motor is powered by both generator and storage battery.
