Approaches to "perfect fuel" gage for electric powered vehicles are considered; new techniques, using special capacitive readout version of Curtis mercury coulometer, are used in ampere-hour meter for rechargeable battery systems; unit consists of small solid-state electronics module driving indicating meter; it is powered from battery and will directly and automatically indicate ampere-hours discharged and charged; unit has automatic stop when meter displays "full" or 100% of capacity to permit safe overcharge situation; additionally, unit can provide alarms and detectors for low capacity signals or auxiliary charge control functions; system is currently under test on number of battery-powered vehicle programs.
