General Motors facilities for testing cars and materials in strong sunshine and at high ambient temperatures in Phoenix, Ariz, are described together with various types of tests conducted; special track is designed for speeds up to 140 mph and has mean circumference of 5 mi; in 3-1/2-lane width of 45 ft, superelevation is only about 6 ft; important objective of high-speed track testing has been to evaluate tire performance and durability on dry surface at high ambient temperatures; all car, truck and accessory divisions of Corporation make use of Desert Proving Ground and surrounding terrain, and all experimental programs are closely coordinated with those of main proving ground in Michigan.
