In Road Research Laboratory Report No. 16 "Effectiveness of Car Safety Belts", data from about 1200 report forms, returned by motorists who had been wearing belts in accidents, were analyzed; accident report forms of one manufacturer of belts (Britax Ltd) for 1965 and 1966 were also examined; forms contained so much information that further analysis was desirable; some of data with respect to reliability, types of accident, and injuries are analyzed; tabulation of injuries caused by striking some part of car, and injuries due to force exerted by belt; types of belts included plain diagonal, lap-and-diagonal, or lap-and-diagonal with inertia reel; percentage of injuries is significantly lower for inertia reel belts than for lap-and-diagonal belts.
