Review considers marine boilers of 1950's and 1960's with reference to both merchant marine and naval types; increasing percentages of such impurities as sulfur and vanadium in residual fuel affected design of superheaters, economizers, and air heaters; as steam conditions are raised, there are more facets of design that must carefully be reconsidered, including furnace rating and arrangement, superheater design, circulation, steam quality, and water level variation during maneuvers; several modern designs are illustrated, and some design data and simplified curves indicate general characteristics that become more critical as size increases and as pressures and temperatures rise.
