Aircraft considered are Bell XV-3 with tilting rotors and fixed wing, Vertol VZ-2 with tilting wing and flapping rotors, Curtiss-Wright X-100 with tilting propellers and small fixed wing, and Doak VZ-4 with tilting, ducted fans at tips of fixed wing; all demonstrated successful conversions from hovering to flight and vice versa; problems encountered due to lack of control power, ground interference effects, wing stalling, and height control.
