Summary of engine and refining advances which caused Research and Motor ratings to become less reliable indices of antiknock quality of gasolines in automobiles; improved "high-speed" test method must substantially duplicate motor-method ratings of paraffinic fuels containing lead, and assign higher ratings to lead treated highly aromatic fuels than to lead-treated olefinic fuels having same difference between Research and Motor ratings; future research.
