Studies of transition at supersonic speeds without heat transfer, performed in wind tunnel of Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Calif Inst Technology, using different sized surface roughnesses (Spheres) to disturb flow; transition was observed by anamorphic schlieren, surface temperature recovery measurements, and surface flow pattern indicators; pertinence to design of high altitude glide vehicles and hypersonic re-entry bodies.
