Design details of X-18 tiltwing `propelloplane', developed by Hiller; it is shown that propelloplane is superior to helicopter for hovering durations less than 10 min, and is competitive for hovering durations up to perhaps 1/2 hr; X-18 wing rotates at 35% of chord line; vertical takeoff effected at 87° wing-tilt; details of fuselage, hydraulic control system and flight control systems; two Allison YT40-A-14 turbo-propeller engines driving dual 16-ftdiam Curtiss turboelectric propellers.
