Source of explosions, followed by fire on two aircraft carriers, was in aircraft catapult machinery space; in one case trouble apparently had started when glove valve in high pressure pneumatic system was cracked open; using similar apparatus in test, it is shown that under certain circumstances, opening valve in h-p pneumatic system can be as potentially dangerous as tossing lighted match on gasoline soaked rags.
