It is suggested that minimum stopping distance cannot be achieved without automatic selection of correct front to rear brake ratio, and most important factor in design is adequate brake cooling; comparison of disk and drum brakes on simplest basis of equal areas and volumes of metal facing friction elements shows disk to run cooler than drum only after repeated applications have raised temperature.
