Problem of carburetor icing consisting of cold stalling during warmup period, and throttle restriction due to ice formation at highway cruise conditions; engine test method whereby test or reference fuel samples are continuously metered upstream from throttle plate; conclusions regarding resistance of fuel compositions and gasoline additives to both forms of icing are based upon equivalent concentrations of reference alcohol mixture in gasoline of known throttle-icing characteristics.
