Cross-traverse motion of crab and longitudinal travel motion of whole crane often arranged without brake for retarting motion after cutting off current supply from motors; maximum permissible speeds relative to maximum distances of travel at which these motions can be safely carried out; if longitudinal-travel speed exceeds 250 ft. per min. brake should be fitted; 200 ft. per. min. is maximum speed at which brake is unnecessary.
