Operation of modern railway marshalling yards is described along with techniques employed to ensure that cars, moving under influence of gravity, are automatically routed and speed controlled by use of modern electronic techniques, including computers; discussion is based on system developed by Westinghouse Brake and Signal Co, Ltd using electropneumatic retarders.
