Pictures obtained with γ-ray nondestructive testing unit provided Chicago Transit Authority with vital data on weld discontinuities or weaknesses in new, all-welded elevated track section; to insure highest quality welds, fast-moving test procedure was set up, calling for γ-ray inspection of 60 welds/day; advantages of welded rail over conventional joints.
