End-burning, side-vented motor was developed to produce one-dimensional acoustic oscillations; with use of transparent quartz tube containing propellant sample and serving as part of combustion chamber during burning, direct measurement of unburnt length of propellant as function of time is made with motion picture camera and Vanguard analyzer; statistical analysis of data shows that average burning rates can be determined to 3 significant figures with technique; typical experiment described.
