Detailed description of technique used at Douglas Missile and Space Systems Div plant in Santa Monica, Calif for making waffle pattern in aluminum plates that make up tank segments for supercold liquid-hydrogen fuel tanks for S-IVB stage of Saturn V moon rocket; machining of waffle pattern is done on Giddings and Lewis skin-milling machine on which entire table is actually vacuum chuck; routing of waffle-like cavities is accomplished by two special milling heads controlled by electro-servo hydraulic system built by tooling department of company.
