Atlas space launch vehicle is liquid propellant, 1 1/2-stage rocket; propellants are fuel (RP-1) and liquid oxygen contained in thin-skinned, stainless steel airframes; design requirement for propellant depletion system stems from need for advance signal to engine system, indicating impending depletion; survey of liquid level sensing systems indicated that magnetostrictive sensor combines best qualifications available, and possesses high degree of ruggedness and resistance to shock; details of fuel depletion system under development and test at General Dynamics/Astronautics.
