Athena system was conceived to reduce costs of systematic investigations of phenomena associated with ballistic missile payloads in re-entry environment; program also includes tests to establish military feasibility and value of advanced re-entry concepts; Athena is 4-stage solid propellant missile; first 2-stage motor lofts vehicle to desired position in space; third- and fourth-stage motors drive payload earthward at ICBM re-entry velocities until payload separation is accomplished.
