Experience of 10 years with 356 driving gears on S. W. Section of Southern Ry. seems to indicate that both high degree of accuracy and superfine finish, such as are obtained by grinding, are not only superfluous, but may be even disadvantageous, and therefore unnecessarily expensive, both as regards manufacture and maintenance.
