Develops equation for calculation from maximum permissible axle load, modulus of elasticity of rail support, distance from wheel load to point of zero bending moment, and maximum stresses in rail due to single wheel load and combination of wheel loads, under one of the drivers of a locomotive. See also Ry. Engr., vol. 47, no. 555, Apr. 1926, pp. 123 and 146, 1 fig. Results of investigations into problem of determining permissible decrease in weight of rail per yard or increase in maximum permissible axle load for given weight of rail per yard with close spacing of ties.
