Object of 10-yr plan for 1956-63 was to increase length of existing quays to 50 mi, double area of water available to shipping to 2850 acres and to provide docks with depths of water of between 45-and 54-ft alongside; arrangements were made also to supply port with latest cargo handling equipment and other facilities, and to offer further 3000 acres of land for industrial exploitation on or near waterfront.
